THE CHALLENGE
A transportation manufacturer which makes turbo impellers from molten metal casts the impeller moulds on site from a type of plaster. The mould called a “Tree” and forms about 16 impellers at a time. The knockout hammer, working at a pressure of 5 bar, knocks the plaster off the moulded component. This process produces a lot of noise and the enclosure that houses this process was not sufficient for the Project Engineer. The noise source is a combination of metal impact and high velocity air discharge due to the process. Ventac were called into to design a solution and to bring noise emissions to within acceptable levels.
THE SOLUTION
Ventac visited the engineering workshop which manufactures the knockout hammers and took relevant noise measurements to ascertain the working noise level. From this, we selected a suitable material that would work at the reducing the noise level at the measured frequencies. A preliminary design was worked up and proposed. We worked closely with the Project Engineer developing a user friendly and CE acceptable safety system. As safety was the leading concern on this project for the operator, the design incorporated emergency stops and safety trips which were all pneumatically controlled negating the requirement for an electrical connection. This project was delivered on time and on budget. Post install tests were carried out and acceptable noise levels was successfully achieved. Further plans are underway to supply a similar solution to additional booths this year.
